Connect-World Asia-Pacific III 2009

Asia-Pacific III 2009 Magazine introduction

The advance of information and communication technology is largely due to doing more with less, to shrinking the unshrinkable just a little bit more. Shrinking brings lower prices, greater reliability, lower power usage and more functionality in less space. More importantly, the shrinking process is putting the world in the pockets of more and more people each day. Not everyone can afford a PC or a laptop. Many people have limited access to reliable sources of power and fewer have access to the Internet. Nevertheless, shrinking, ever lower-cost devices with easy to feed power requirements promise to bring the world, education and social services to the pockets of most of the world’s inhabitants within the coming decade; the process is already well underway. This issue of Connect-World Asia Pacific will look into the revolutionary shrinking of devices and the equally revolutionary explosion of hope and possibilities this will bring for the region’s businesses and inhabitants.

Article abstract:
The rapid growth of smart devices - in both numbers and functionality - is more than a technological and marketing phenomenon. These ever smaller, more complex and functional devices are changing economic and social scenarios throughout the world. Smartphones provide ‘anywhere’ communications, access to information and entertainment along with being, indispensible business tools. Their advantages are obvious, but the multiple functions they provide and their use of a variety of separately regulated platforms has greatly complicated the regulator’s task.

Article abstract:
By 2015, five billion people will be connected to the world’s networks using a wide variety of devices - mostly much smaller - on an equally wide variety of platforms. Most of this growth will come from emerging markets where operators will have affordably to address the lack of ICT infrastructure in an environmentally sustainable way. Smaller, energy-efficient PCs, mobile handsets and the like will help meet these challenges as will smaller and smarter communications networks, including compact GSM access points.

Article abstract:
Voice, data, information and entertainment are now accessible from increasingly smaller handsets. Handset design, combined with advanced chip technology and innovative wireless network solutions, squeeze more functions into increasingly compact packages with substantially improved performance. Converging networks and platforms and accelerated broadband adoption have increased the need for interoperability and solutions that use less space and energy while reducing costs. Single RAN (Radio Access Network) solutions can integrate wireless voice, broadband and more into one network to meet many of these needs.

Article abstract:
As wireless networks evolve, operators will have to integrate several technologies - legacy with advanced - into a single network. Operators must also choose their new networks whilst trying to maintain compatibility with future standards not yet available in the market. This is a particular challenge in developed markets, where mobile operators are faced with radio infrastructure lifecycles of a few years, making it difficult to achieve return on investment. Software defined radio offers a way to minimise risks and costs.

With today’s shrinking technology we video-conference, take photos, film, video, access the Internet, read, enjoy music and videos, do business, play games and even make calls, all on a single handheld device. Network storage and cloud computing shrinks the role of handhelds and other computing devices, but generate enormous amounts of traffic and stress existing networks. Optical fibre can carry tens of gigabits per second and do it in a smaller, more energy efficient footprint than ever before.

Article abstract:
Technological developments have led to deregulation, economic liberalization and integration of a range of industries across the globe. Information and communication technologies and pervasive media are shrinking the world, letting people in remote villages experience far off places and communicate with their family and friends. Distance learning develops their skills for outsourcing, off-shoring and remote jobs. The world’s technological transformation puts pressure on the very businesses that are facilitating the change and creating today’s smaller, flatter and faster world.

Article abstract:
Smartphone use is growing not only for voice calls, but for emailing, file downloads, music and video access, and work - much like with computers, but on the move. However there are gaps in network coverage in remote regions and when people are on the move. Satellites reach everywhere, but traditional antennas are large, heavy and, generally speaking, directional. New flat antenna technology reduces antenna size and weight so they can be readily installed on cars, trains and planes.

Article abstract:
In many regions mobile penetration is approaching saturation. Consequently, mobile markets are highly competitive, prices are dropping, and voice revenues are squeezed forcing operators to focus on value-added services to boost revenues. Despite demand for mobile services, few use them - few people can deal with the complexities of configuring their mobile devices to access these services and this causes major VAS revenue shortfalls. Mobile operators must thus be able to manage and configure their customer’s mobile devices remotely.

Smartphones dominate the headlines, but the vast majority of mobile phone users own far more modest devices, especially in Asia’s fastest growing markets. For many in China, Indonesia and India, the mobile phone is their only link to Internet services. Many consider the Western world or Japan to be leaders in mobile communications, but the rest of Asia is really leading the way, with mass-market services - especially mobile social networking and graphical data services for ultra-low cost phones.

Article abstract:
Technological convergence, market liberalisation and free web-based services such as file sharing, instant messaging, email and social networks and VoIP push the exponential growth of traffic, put downward pressure on prices and commoditise services. This makes it difficult for service providers to make the capital investments needed to deal with dynamic markets and changes in consumer perceptions. A new managed services model - called whole-of-business - joins providers who might otherwise be competitors to meet end-customer needs within a sustainable partnering framework.

Article abstract:
Carriers must continually strive to offer customer ‘more for less’ - deliver more and better services at a lower price. Nevertheless, cost cutting through efficiency and building market share through better, more innovative, services - not easy to do simultaneously - will both be needed to make this work. Network convergence - building a single infrastructure to deliver all voice, video and data services regardless of access method - and getting the technology and service delivery right from the start are essential.

Competition for subscribers is also intense, so it absolutely vital to use leading-edge network and user-centric optimization techniques to get the best performance from existing network resources. There are systems, such as two-factor authentication (2FA), which uses onetime passwords (OTPs) generated by a physical device to provide a high level of security.
