Magazine introduction
Broadband is the game, the future of telecommunications – wired and wireless alike. What are the today’s best growth strategies? How do you pay for the buildout? How do you fill the pipes later? How do equipment manufacturers, the software developers, content providers, regulators and, yes, the users, fit into the new environment? |

Although the growth of broadband in the Asia-Pacific region has been impressive, it has not always reached those in need of it as a catalyst for socio-economic development. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) progress report on Millennium Development Goals (MDG) reports mixed results. While some states
made remarkable progress with health, poverty and education, none will achieve all the MDGs and some are likely to miss many or most of the goals. |

| Satellite broadband connectivity worldwide is growing. Satellites often provide the only access businesses have to broadband in remote areas. It also provides residential broadband access in regions where no other networks exist. Distance learning and e-commerce offerings are helping close the digital divide in thousands of towns and villages in developing countries. Additionally, emergency preparedness, broadband on the move, and high availability VPN (virtual private network) services are enabling government agencies to better serve their citizens and respond to disasters. |

| Article abstract: |
| Satellite telecommunications play a vital role in the Asia-Pacific region. Satellites bring network connectivity to remote villages and often provide the only reliable platform that businesses and government offices have within the region for vital communications. During emergencies such as the Taiwan earthquake last December, satellites quickly restored services for many voice, video and data providers. Currently, though, providing redundant and secure delivery of TV content to the IPTV networks is one of the major uses for satellite transmission. |

| Article abstract: |
| The Internet is fast becoming a ‘Videonet’ , dominated by video applications. The Videonet, increasingly driven by Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic, has over 200 million users worldwide. Demand for P2P and video is overwhelming service provider infrastructures and leading to poor-quality service and network bottlenecks. To support this demand and prepare for the next wave of Internet TV - offering hundreds or thousands of ‘channels’ competing with traditional broadcast - and video-on-demand, service providers must turn to new types of network solutions. |

| Article abstract: |
Growing demand for broadband-based service will, in time, force the replacement of current copper-based networks by fibre-to-the-home networks. Since it will be difficult to guarantee adequate returns on investment for these expensive networks if several networks are competing in the same region, the need for government regulated infrastructure sharing seems likely. Although private investment in these networks is growing, government investment will also be needed, as will government action to foster service competition and encourage usage uptake.

| Operators in developed regions and new, ‘greenfield’ operators in emerging economies seem quite different but face many similar challenges. They have difficult decisions to make preparing their networks to meet current challenges while, simultaneously, planning the upgrades that must follow to meet rising demands for greater capacity and new services. Multi-service access nodes (MSAN) are designed for high bandwidth NGN access. They offer greenfield operators a cost-effective foundation network for today’s voice and data, easily upgradeable to handle future applications. |

| Outsourcing of services such as integration, operations and maintenance of value-added services, (VAS), billing and selected network functions lets operators devote their resources to their core business. The need to rapidly and economically deploy new services and technologies strains the existing resources of most operators and has led to the emergence of managed services, (MS). MS lets operators concentrate on their core competencies, while benefiting from direct operational cost savings, faster time to market, and enhanced capital and resource usage. |

| Article abstract: |
| New technology makes new services possible, but turning new ideas into marketable and profitable services calls for information systems that let service providers accurately gauge the real needs and interests of their subscribers. Rapid deployment of new services can depend as much upon being able to work efficiently and rapidly with content and special service providers, as it does with marketing. Internal systems need the ability to flexibly and accurately track and bill new services and administer the partner relationships. |

With mobile social networking, we will take our social universe with us. This phenomenon is growing and taking shape in Japan. Wireless social networking depends upon adapting social networking sites to the small screens and keyboards of most cell phones, and upon the growth of third-generation mobile broadband. |

| Article abstract: |
| ICT sector suppliers, after years of technology-based competition, have finally discovered that the customer cares more about having his problems resolved efficiently and cost-effectively than about the technology employed to resolve them. Customers want connectivity, interoperability and scalability, maintenance, service level agreements and financing. No one is talking ‘core and access’ any more! Smooth evolution to IP-based network architectures and delivering a top-quality experience to users are areas in which managed services companies can play a decisive role. |

| Article abstract: |
There have been significant events throughout history, which have changed the way we communicate and jumpstarted periods of increased understanding. From the alphabet and the Rosetta Stone, to Gutenberg’s press and Bell’s telephone, each of these advances has improved our ability to communicate with one another, to share knowledge and to preserve it for generations to come.
Each successive advance has made communication simpler and easier. Communication, especially to a large audience, has traditionally been a complicated matter. This complexity meant that only an elect few - the scribes, scholars and storytellers - participated intensively in the mystical art of information exchange. It wasn’t until the invention of the printing press, and the ensuing explosion of literacy, that the ability to communicate en masse became a practical matter for the rest of the population. |

Subscriber-centric policy management can accelerate the launch of new services and improve the users’ overall Quality of Experience (QoE). Policy management controls access to network resources based upon subscriber attributes and entitlements, helps build and deliver personalised service packages, attributes and features on the basis of subscribers’ personal preferences. |
